Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon, Leonardini Vineyard, St. Helena, Napa Valley 2014
NVWE Notes: A terrific example of its vineyard and great vintage, this juicy-rich yet soft-edged Cab offers scents of Italian Maraschino cherry, black cherry, black currant, dark boysenberry, sweet dark pipe tobacco, toffee, vanilla, Kalamata olive, black tea and star anise. On the palate the vineyard's characteristic tannic grip is pushed rearward by a plush wave of fruit and sweet-savory spice. The finishing fruit and spice notes are a focused, slightly more coiled mirror of the nose, which suggests that this already very delicious wine will have much more to reveal to those with patience to hide some in the cellar for five years or so. 630 cases produced.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Leonardini Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 65% new French oak, This should be contrasted with the same Cabernet Sauvignon called Leonardini Estate with the Napa moniker. This wine could turn out to be the best of the whole group I tasted, with a dense ruby/purple color and plenty of unsmoked cigar tobacco mixed with licorice, pen ink, graphite, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. It is a big boy -- rich, full-bodied, lusty, and approachable already, even though it's not yet in bottle. This should drink well for 15-20 years.
