EDEN RIFT PINOT NOIR '16
EDEN RIFT PINOT NOIR "ESTATE", CIENEGA VALLEY 2016
NVWE Notes: This is an exciting new estate with a bright future, and the debut bottling elegantly poises complex, piquant fruit above mineral undercurrents and an impressive spine of tannin. The aromas are a composite of red plum, red currant, dried strawberry, dark cherry, Bing cherry, dried red rose and peppercorn, with star anise and ginger accents. That fruit is replicated if more tightly-coiled on the palate, and added notes of red apple skin and cherry pit join hard minerality to give the wine an almost sinewy mouth-feel. Lingering and food-friendly, it should prove an especially good match to fatty meats at this point, although a few years of cellar-time should produce a more distinctive bottling. 1275 cases produced.
The 2016 Estate Pinot Noir unfurls in the glass with a bouquet of wild plum, red cherry, dried flowers and smoky herbs that reveals lovely incipient complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky and supple, with an expansive attack, excellent mid-palate depth, and a lingering, tangy finish. This really impresses for its textural seamlessness and stylistic maturity.
Bright red. Mineral-accented red berries cherry pit and rose pastille on the expressive sharply focused nose. Juicy and energetic on the palate offering nicely concentrated raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that show good clarity and spicy lift. Powerful yet lithe with subtle tannins and a lingering suggestion of candied flowers. This graceful Pinot benefits quite a bit from aeration. Drink 2020 - 2025. Josh Raynolds Oct 2018
