CARTER CABERNET WEITZ '17

CARTER CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON WEITZ VINEYARD OAKVILLE NAPA VALLEY 2017

NVWE Notes: This is an especially ripe vintage at "Weitz", and the bottling's typically "red cherry and red currant dominant" personality shifts toward the black. The aromas are a darkly rich melange of black currant, black fig, black cherry, dried dark rose, black tea, bouillon, clove, licorice root, Victorian toffee and coffee bean. Tongue-drenching flavors of black cherry and black currant take center-stage on the palate, along with counterpoints of blood orange, black licorice, mint, sandalwood, coffee toffee and sweet tobacco which join-in to keep the tannins at bay. There is tannin aplenty however, so cellaring is a fine idea as is substantial airing, should the wine be served in the near term.

Wine Advocate

93 Points

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard features stewed plums, blueberry preserves, baked blackcurrants and raspberry preserves with touches of cedar chest, pencil lead, forest floor and smoked meats. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a firm chewy texture and taut, muscular fruit, finishing savory. Drink Date 2020 - 2036. Issue 245 End of October 2019

Vinous

93 Points

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard is bold and punchy, but also tightly wound for the year, which is surprising. Inky blue and purplish fruit, licorice, lavender, spice, menthol and gravel all develop in the glass, but the 2017 remains quite reticent, especially within the context of the year. Readers need to give the 2017 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften. Drink 2020 - 2037 Antonio Galloni Jan 2020
