Calera 2016 Pinot Noir Ryan
CALERA PINOT NOIR RYAN VINEYARD MOUNT HARLAN, MONTEREY COUNTY 2016
NVWE Notes: This is very much a Calera Pinot in its layering of rich, youthfully reserved, mineral-accented fruit and distinctive spice. The aromas are a subtly-rich melange of dried raspberry, blueberry, teaberry, cranberry, strawberry cobbler, violet, dry rose, sandalwood, star anise and Pu’er tea that rise above a suggestion of crushed rock. It is firm in texture, yet tongue-coating on the palate, where strong mineral notes join tannic grip to firm the mouth-feel. The finish is very long and it carries some of each of the elements promised in the nose, but with flavors of dark boysenberry at center-stage. 250 cases produced.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard is a tight, backward wine. Firm tannins give the Ryan a decidedly brooding feel. Smoke, licorice, leather, tobacco and incense emerge with time in the glass, adding to an impression of earthiness and gravitas. This is an especially somber style. More importantly, readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 is tightly wound and in no mood to show all of its cards. Drink 2021 - 2030 Antonio Galloni Oct 2019
