Gutsy and notably youthful, with Cote Rotie-like elements and the beginnings of some floral highlights, this Syrah focuses on scents of black raspberry, boysenberry, pomegranate, dark sour cherry, violet, pink rose, black peppercorn, clove and hazelnut, all poised above dark mineral undercurrents. Fruit zest and strong mineralogy combine to create a bracing impression on the palate, where long lingering cherry and pomegranate flavors counterpoint a deeper core of dark berries, the whole graced by a sweet-natured note of star anise. Although it should show its best at this point with a crusted pork roaster the like, it wants three years or so to bring all of its disparate elements into full harmony.
