Pilcrow 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon
2018 Pilcrow Cabernet Sauvignon Granite Lake Howell Mountain, Napa Valley
San Francisco Wine Panel Score: 99 Points
NVWE Notes: Almost statuesque in its combination of varietal purity and polished winemaking, and a nearly perfect expression of its vineyard’s ferocious top of Howell Mountain terroir, this obviously cellar-needy bottling speaks volumes despite it’s extreme youth. The nose is a fruit-centric perfume of blackberry, dark cherry, black raspberry, purple plum jam, clove, cedar, mace, vanilla, laurel and gravely mineral scents. Firmness is unyielding on the palate yet the otherwise severe spine of tannin is subdued by a supple veneer of focused fruit which makes the wine surprisingly dinner-worthy. At the finish the flavors holds focus, while blueberry becomes the dominant fruit note. Best enjoyed now with Prime Rib or other fat-rich meats, it is ten years from anything like full maturity and it could still seem fresh when entering its third decade. 181 cases produced.
