2015 Nielson Pinor Noir Santa Maria Valley
San Francisco Wine Panel Score 89 Points
Genteel and pretty, this mature Pinot Noir offers an elegant bouquet of plum tart, strawberry-rhubarb pie, berry compote, nutmeg, coriander seed, mace and baking spice scents. It shows both fine evolution and a bit more savory depth on the palate, where accents of mace, coriander seed, tobacco leaf and a hint of cardamom support fruit flavors centered on baked red plum, strawberry and red boysenberry. A trace note of forest mushroom appears as the wine airs. Dry and softly tart, it is built for food service and fully ready to enjoy. 570 cases produced.

2015 Gregory Graham Syrah Lake County

San Francisco Wine Panel Score 89 Points

Greg Graham’s Syrah is always soft-edged and forthcoming and the nose offers a genteel melange of plum, cherry and peppercorn aromas with a hint of sweet-savory spice in the background. It is medium-bodied, supple in texture and delivers lingering flavors of plum, cherry, dried cranberry and tobacco along with a hint of peppercorn. It is ready to enjoy and will be tasty with a wide variety of entrees.

2018 Odonata Malbec Pedrigal Vineyard San Benito County

San Francisco Wine Panel Score 90 Points

Although varietally on-point, this Malbec has a character quite different from previous Odonata bottlings. The nose offers an almost textbook blueberry, currant, mocha and sandalwood combo, yet those scents are perfumed by intriguing counterpoints of laurel, rosemary and pumpkin pie spice. Fruit takes center-stage on the palate along with sweet tobacco and baking-spice notes to push the herbal exotica into deep background. This wine may prove even more fruit-centric in another year, although a supple texture makes it an easy drinker already. 400 cases made.

2018 Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Rassi Vineyard Sonoma Valley

San Francisco Wine Panel Score 91 Points
Black raspberry, black currant preserves, dark sour cherry and sweet dark plum join hazelnut, baking-spice and sweet vanilla scents in the nose of this notably well-priced Cab. Black currant, blackberry and mulberry flavors dominate on the palate, where polished tannins join nut husk, black tea leaf and graphite undercurrents to bring depth and firm the mouth-feel. The result is a gutsy, lingering medley of all that the aromas promise. A fine companion to steaks and winter stews right now, it is likely to improve for at least eighteen months.

2012 Clos Pizzarra “El Ramon” Proprietary Red Wine Bellmunt Vineyard

San Francisco Wine Panel Score 92+ Points

Very ripe, rich yet structured nose of strawberry jam, cassis, black currant, sour red cherry, pomegranate syrup, white and black peppercorn, sumac berry, licorice root, hazelnut toffee, dark pipe tobacco and dried dark rose. On the palate, it is ultra palate-coating and shows sturdy tannins and dark minerality to create a gutsy overall feel. The finish is youthful and extremely long, and it finishes with a push of strawberry jam, red cherry, red currant, cassis, pomegranate, cedar, toffee and vanilla poised above a rich vein of dark earth. It is unfiltered and has thrown some sediment. 580 cases produced.

2020 Sobon Zinfandel ‘Fiddletown” Lubenko Vineyard Amador

San Francisco Wine Panel Score 90 Points

This is a soft-edged and richly fruity Zin with aromas of dark cherry, sweet red plum, dried cranberry, raspberry and star anise which rise above undercurrents of black peppercorn. It is just as fruity on the palate, with a plump mouth-feel and all the promised flavors along with notes of violet and blueberry. Long, balanced and satisfying all the way, it is a pleasure now and may bring more next year. 1100 cases produced.
