Perhaps the favorite Zinfandel source of Joel Peterson (legendary founder of Ravenswood and as experienced a Zin maker as anyone living), Frank’s Block produces a reliably wonderful bottling in just about any vintage, and with Joel’s handling does so again in 2020. The aromas are super complex yet strikingly youthful, as plush, piquant notes of boysenberry, red plum, red raspberry, pomegranate, pink peppercorn and fresh red rose stay in the foreground. It proves fruit-packed and vibrantly delicious at first sip, with intensity, tannic grip and minerality all creating a sense of intrinsic pwer. It is long, gutsy and truly satisfying despite its obvious youth. Certain to evolve for many years to come, it is a stellar example of what old vines and passionate wine making can achieve.
