The Douglas Crest vineyard, located near the famous Monte Bello property, produces a distinctive Santa Cruz Cabernet. The aromas of the 2016 are a mix of sour red cherry, raspberry, red boysenberry, grenadine, red plum, rose, laurel, canela, sweet tobacco and dried herbal scents. Fruit notes dominate on the palate, where sour cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, violet and rose flavors take center-stage, with laurel, dried rosemary, sage, sweet tobacco and forest-floor spice notes giving support through a lingering finish. Youthful zest and polished tannins are notable through that finish, where tannin is visible yet unobtrusive. It is a fine dinner wine already that offers an attractive balance of finesse and backbone. It should get better for at least a few more years. 145 cases produced.
