Morlet 2017 Chardonnay Ma Douce
2017 Morlet Chardonnay "Ma Douce" Fort Ross Seaview, Sonoma
San Francisco Wine Panel Score: 98 Points
NVWE Notes: Morlet strives yearly to produce Grand Cru Montrachet levels of quality, and in 2017 they have clearly have achieved that exalted goal. Bold, sophisticated and optimally ripe, the nose elevates intense aromas of honeyed nuts, tarte tatin, nectarine tart, pineapple core, orange soufflé, lemon sorbet, nutmeg and toasted meringue above sea shell-like minerality to create a wonderfully elegant harmony. It is intense and plush in the mouth, where all the promised flavors rise as on the crest of a wave toward a lingering, ultra-rich, bone dry finish. Sure to improve for several years, it will be stunning now with sweetbreads in a creamy sauce or buttery lobster and deserves the grandest cuisine that can be provided. 275 Cases produced.

Ma Douce comes from a vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview—not far from Marcassin Vineyard. It is planted mainly to Old Wente clone selection. The 2017 Chardonnay Ma Douce comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of ripe peaches, pink grapefruit and guava plus hints of butterscotch, toasted almonds, orange blossoms and acacia honey. Full-bodied, the palate is laden with exotic fruit and citrus layers, offset by a wicked backbone of freshness and the most seductive creaminess to the texture, finishing very long with tons of savory sparks. 450 cases were made. The 2017 Chardonnay Ma Douce is one of the most intriguing wines in this range of Chardonnays. Bright, focused and also beautifully translucent, the 2017 is distinguished by its layered, subtle personality. Even so, there is plenty of the depth and dimension that are such signatures of the Morlet wines. This is beautifully done. Antonio Galloni
