2017 Larner Syrah "Transverse" Santa Barbara County

NVWE Notes: Deep, complex and packed with spicy-earthy contrasts, the nose of this Syrah layers savory-sweet scents of beef jerky, soy sauce, mace, clove, dark pipe tobacco, date sugar and carob molasses above a richer core of black raspberry, Cassis, pomegranate syrup, dark sour cherry and violet. It is palate-coating, fruity-spicy and much fresher in the mouth, where long-lingering flavors of sour red cherry, black raspberry, pomegranate syrup, carob molasses, licorice root and clove counterpoint pink and black peppercorn. Delicious and built for service with rich, peppery beef or lamb roasts, it should improve for another three or four years.

The 2017 Transverse is a terrific introduction to these wines. For the Transverse Michael Larner blends fruit from four sites (outside the estate) for an easygoing Syrah that will drink well right out of the gate.
