2017 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon “Altagracia” Calistoga, Napa Valley

NVWE Notes: Classically “Calistoga” in is saturated purple color, this delicious Cabernet is even more so in its layering of opulent, ripe fruit. The nose delivers scents of black currant preserves, black plum, dark boysenberry, black fig and violet, that rise above others of date sugar, bitter chocolate, coffee toffee and graphite. It is ultra-plush on the palate, with balancing zest and lots of of polished tannins in support of a juicy core of black currant and black plum. The fruit notes remain dominant through a very long, tannin-suppressing finish, where all the sweet-savory spice notes take their rightful place behind a push of black currant and dark berry. Likely to improve for three to five more years, it is a “guilty pleasure” now. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc & 6% Petite Verdot. 1770 cases made.

This vintage has a bit less Petit Verdot than usual, but basically remains about 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia leaps from the glass, offering bold, expressive notes of blackberry pie, Black Forest cake and warm cassis with hints of garrigue, mossy tree bark, dusty soil and black pepper plus a fragrant waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a great core of rich, spicy black fruit preserves, framed with firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing earthy. Drink Date 2020 - 2035.
