The “Grand Daddy” block is typically the plumpest and juiciest of Carter’s grand-scale Cabs and is often their most immediately impressive Cab at release, yet that weight is tempered in 2022 by an extra note of zest. The aromas are a creamy, notably ripe medley of purple plum pie, dark cherry galette and boysenberry jam scents, supported by luxurious notes of pomegranate molasses, tobacco, coffee toffee, baking spice and licorice root. On the palate, tannic grip and piquant cherry pit notes bring an impression of sappiness to the otherwise tongue-coating mouthfeel, and this creates an appealing note of tension and food-worthiness that promises early appeal. The finish stays fruit-centric and lingers well, yet its youthful reserve strongly suggests that cellar time will bring significant rewards, so another 3-5 years of age sounds appropriate.
