Carter 2018 Cabernet Weitz
2018 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard Oakville Napa Valley
NVWE Notes: This wine does not yet show the aristocratic class of Carter’s great 2012 Weitz, but it is even grander in scale and may yet eclipse its older sibling. The aromas are a luxurious and powerful perfume of sour dark cherry, black cherry, red currant jam, violet, nutmeg, mace, cedar, baking-spice, sweet tobacco, dried herb and toffee scents . It is as grand in scale as expected on the palate, offering juicy-ripe, focused fruit and an ultra palate-coating texture that is more than a match for its impressive dose of tannin. The finish is extremely long and becomes significantly more complex and elegant with airing. Expect this operatic beauty to grow in dimension for five to ten years and possibly well beyond.
The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard rocks up with ready-for-business scents of stewed plums, blackberry preserves, ripe blackcurrants and kirsch plus suggestions of bay leaves, pencil shavings and iron ore. Full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves layers with a black pepper and herbs undercurrent and sturdy frame of grainy tannins, finishing with an earthy lift. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard captures all of the mystique of this site on the hills of Eastern Oakville. Beautifully layered and complex, the Weitz offers up a compelling mélange of macerated black cherry, menthol, licorice, chocolate, spice and leather melded together in a deep, beautifully layered wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring, provided it is opened well in advance.
