The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Carrera Estate Blend bursts from the glass with notions of black raspberries, red currant jelly and cassis plus hints of pencil lead, dried Mediterranean herbs and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with bright, vivacious black and red berry layers, framed by finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note. Classically structured and optimally ripe, the aromas of this classy Bordeaux blend are a focused medley of dark plum, dark boysenberry, sour dark cherry, pomegranate, cocoa nib, toffee, sweet tobacco, hazelnut, graphite and crushed rock scents. Tannin and minerality create a racy, firm and tightly-wound impression on the palate, where piquant fruit and sweet-savory spice seem a coiled reprise of the notes. The finish is youthfully bright, lingering and is centered on plum, mulberry and pomegranate. Airing expands the flavors to bring dark plum, dark boysenberry, blueberry, cherry brandy, mace, cedar and baking-spice to the forefront. Best for service dark fatty meats at this stage, it should grow ever finer over the next five years. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot (includes less than 1% Malbec).
