NVWE Notes: This is, once again, a great vintage for this celebrated bottling. The nose is a piquant, intense, focused rush of red currant, black currant, Italian Maraschino cherry, bottled red cherry, pomegranate syrup, black plum, beet, red rose, pink and black peppercorn, licorice root, Kalamata olive, black tea leaf, dark tobacco and canela scents. Vibrant freshness and polished tannins create tension on the mid-palate, where the flavors mimic the aromas but on an even grander scale. The finish is extremely long and intense, with a big push of red and black fruits, dark rose and foresty spice at the end. It is fabulous now, with airing, and it’s certain to be much better in 4 years and beyond. It may prove to be long-lived. 800 cases produced.
