2020 Vintage Cabernet Box

Introducing the 2020 Vintage Cabernet Box

Every year, the Napa Valley Winery Exchange releases the best Cabernet Sauvignons of the year. Given the fires in 2020, we were worried there might not be any wines to offer…but boy, were we wrong. While the majority of Napa wineries didn’t make wines in 2020, some who picked early made classic Napa Cabernets. Overall, our impression is that the 2020 wines are more fruit forward and approachable than previous vintages, but still maintain the structure necessary for additional aging.  This year’s six-pack of the 2020 Vintage Cab Box is everything you’d expect and more.

2020 Corison, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, St Helena,

Napa Valley

Medium to full-bodied, beautiful and restrained, with savory aromatics of fennel, black licorice, cedar, and black currants. Soft, satiny blackberry fruits are lifted by fine-grained yet supple tannins while a purity of fruit guides the palate to a long, tobacco-tinged finish marked by a mineral-freshness that beckons sip after sip—100% Cabernet. Aged 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2035. Jonathan Cristaldi 05 Apr 2023

2020 Krutz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of cassis, baked plums and boysenberries waft from the glass, followed by hints of dusty soil, Indian spices and wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers bright, fresh, youthful fruit with a grainy texture and spicy lift on the finish.

2020 Peirson Meyer Cabernet Sauvignon, Calistoga, Napa Valley

Fruit-forward and already a charmer, this Cabernet opens with a complex perfume of sweet dark plum, fresh red and black berries, dark cherry galette, clove, dry red rose, dry sage, star anise and baking spice scents. Although firmed by tannin and minerality on the palate, it is never less than elegant. If the fruit is a hint more tightly wound in the mouth, it holds its own through a harmonious, lingering finish that is delicious and impressively food worthy. This beauty may well improve if allowed another few years in the cellar, yet its current appeal may cause it to disappear much sooner. 140 cases produced from the Kenefich Ranch.

2020 Pilcrow Cabernet Sauvignon, Ghost Block Vineyard, Yountville, Napa Valley

From its deep purple color to its lingering finish, this is a notably ripe, clean and polished 2020 Cabernet of immediate appeal. The nose is a harmonious medley of black raspberry, blueberry, Cassis, red currant, violet, toffee, tobacco leaf and star anise. The mid-palate flavors are a focused and delightfully elegant reprise of the aromas, and they swamp the wine’s substantial tannins to continue the impression of polished richness without a pause. The finish layers in brighter flavors of cherry pit and red apple skin in counterpoint to the wines sweet-natured, oaky spice. The result is a terrific, notably charming dinner wine. 175 cases produced.

2020 Sojourn Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley

This is a gorgeous Cabernet, absolutely true to its appellation and clearly of Reserve quality. The aromas are a concentrated, focused medley of sour dark cherry, cassis, black raspberry, pomegranate molasses, toasted oak and baking spice, with mineral undercurrents and suggestions of sweet tobacco and dried herbs. There is notable concentration, minerality and tannic backbone on the mid-plate, where the flavors promised in the nose are precisely replicated, if in a more youthfully coiled presentation. As the wine airs, the finish grows ever more delicious, to ultimately prove just as flattering as the aromas. Terrific now, it may prove quite special if allowed three or four more years to further evolve. 350 cases made.
