Scar of the Sea 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard
Scar of the Sea Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard, Block 11, Santa Maria, “Mt. Eden Clone” 2017
NVWE Notes: If virtually a clone of the great 2016 Block 11, this wine opens with a bit more youthful awkwardness. However, with a bit of airing, the aromas find focus and start to charge from the glass, delivering deeply-etched scents of golden fig, golden mulberry, gooseberry, nectarine, peach pit, toasted meringue and brioche, along with emerging hints of pineapple core, toasted coconut and coriander seed. On the palate, it is densely fruit-packed, youthfully fresh and absolutely tongue-coating, with the combination of piquant zest, minerality and old-vine juiciness bringing tension to the mouth-feel. The finish is ultra long and the impression is almost “weighty”, despite great zest and chalky minerality. If fabulous now, it will be more so in a few more years, and deserves service with grand cuisine. 100 cases made.

The 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Block 11 opens with gregarious smoked meats, gunflint,
dried hay, wafts of flowers and a core of golden apples. The palate is medium to full-bodied and
satiny in texture, with loads of toasty fruits cut through by rocky notions and tangy acidity, and
it finishes long and perfumed. What a pretty, restrained style. 150 cases were made. Drink Date: 2020 - 2026. Erin Brooks 30th Oct 2020
